Kefalonia, Greece

I quit my job...and went to Greece. Well, Kefalonia to be exact. Our original plan was to go island hopping but instead we settled on spending 10 days on the beautiful island of Kefalonia.

Where is Kefalonia?
Kefalonia is on the west of Greece, and is the largest of the Ionian Islands.

How long did you stay?
10 days

Where did you stay?
4 days - Argostoli
3 days - Fiscardo
2 days - Sami
1 days - Lassi

I'm going to do a more in depth post on each place that we visited but there's a few things that I picked up on that will hopefully help anybody who is thinking about visiting the island.

1. Public transport
In all the research I did before visiting Kefalonia I was led to believe that it would be near impossible to travel around the island without hiring a car/moped. However, we used the bus service we had no problem at all - other than one particularly nerve wracking journey where the driver had smoked two cigarettes, taken a phone call and almost ran over sort sort of ferret within the first 10 minutes of the journey! Let's just say I don't think they're as strict on health and safety in Kefalonia! This being said, we only needed to use the buses to travel between each location - if you wanted to spend time exploring towns and villages you would probably need to hire transport.

2. Don't trust the internet for everything!
I did quite a bit of research before we went to get an idea of ferries, what to do etc. There is actually much more available. e.g. online I could only fine one ferry timetable online for a certain route but we found out that there were a lot more options!

3. Learn some Greek!
I felt so rude being completely ignorant to the Greek language - I didn't even know how to say thank you! It's been so long since I've been to a country where I can't speak even a few words in the language. Almost everybody could speak English but it's nice to make the effort.

4. Waiters are very forward...
...and aren't afraid to invite themselves out for a drink with you - or in one case, invite you to visit them in Athens! (Don't worry, we declined!)

5. The food is unreal...
...the wine can be a little more hit and miss. If you're like me and tend to stick with red over white wine, make sure you don't get the cold red wine. Yes, it is as bad as it sounds.

I can't wait to share more about each destination that we visited. Until then, antio sas! (See, I learnt a little bit of Greek!!)

  1. Looking forward to your next posts on Kefalonia! I loved it when I visited a few years ago, however you definitely saw more of the island than what I did. Your pictures are great too!
