Review/Recommend: Peaky Blinders

Anyone that knows me will know my love for Peaky Blinders. I have watched the first two seasons about 12 times and have finally gathered up the courage to watch Season 3 again (if you know, you know *cough, cough Grace*).

Peaky Blinders follows the Shelby family, a family of gangsters in Birmingham in the aftermath of the First World War. The family are led by Tommy (Cillian Murphy) who is clever, ambitious and, fresh from the trenches of France, dangerously determined. The gang get their name from sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps. The other key players of the Shelby Family, Arthur (Paul Anderson) John (Joe Cole) and matriarch Aunt Pol (Helen McCrory) follow Tommy's lead as their power spreads. A friend described it to me as 'the most beautifully filmed epic' and I can't fault her explanation. It is written and filmed wonderfully and, as contemporary music is played over the backdrop of 1920s Birmingham, it works flawlessly. The real treat of it all is Tommy Shelby. Cillian Murphy plays the character perfectly. Although you know that he is a gangster, emotionally damaged from the war and dangerously determined, one look of those blue eyes and you'd be ready to choose a life of crime...!

Season 4 premiers on 15th November 2017 on BBC Two.
